For GPs and referrers

Three ways to refer, what to include, and how long families can expect to wait.

Ways to refer

The fewer steps for the family, the sooner we can triage. Secure messaging is best.

Easiest for you and the family

Send it from your clinical software

Write your usual referral in Best Practice or MedicalDirector, choose Paeds Plus, and send it by HealthLink secure messaging. It arrives straight in our practice system, and we contact the family.

Upload it here for the family

Upload the letter with the parent's contact details. We take it from there, so the family doesn't need to submit anything.

Upload a referral

Give the letter to the family

Email or print the letter for the family. They upload it to our referral form, which fills itself in from the letter for them to check.

What happens next

  1. We triage

Every referral is triaged to the most appropriate clinic and clinician. Urgent medical referrals are prioritised.

  2. We contact the family

We email them after triage and phone to book.

  3. We keep you in the loop

We send you feedback once your patient has been seen.

Please include

  • The child's full details and a parent's mobile.
  • Past and current medical and developmental conditions.
  • Current concerns and the reason for referral.
  • The clinic requested: general medical, developmental, ADHD or psychiatry.

Prioritised clinics

Unsettled babies, breathing problems, asthma and recurrent infections are given priority appointments. Developmental concerns and ADHD are seen in their own clinics, each with its own list.

New patients must be under 16 at their first appointment.

Policies referrers ask about

Transfer of care

Our paediatricians can't accept transfer of care from paediatricians who are still consulting, including telehealth services. Handover can be considered when a paediatrician retires, closes their practice, or the family moves interstate, with a GP referral and a detailed handover letter.

ADHD co-prescribing

Our GPs don't co-prescribe or co-manage for patients of external paediatricians, and can't take transfers of care for children diagnosed elsewhere.

Referral validity

GP referrals are valid for 12 months and specialist referrals for three months, from the first appointment. A referral can be electronic, as long as it is dated and signed.

Child psychiatry

Our child and adolescent psychiatrist is accepting new referrals for young people up to 17. The current wait is about 3 months.

Allied health

Families can self-refer to occupational therapy, speech pathology and dietetics. A GP Chronic Condition Management Plan (GPCCMP), an M10 referral or a Better Access plan is needed for a Medicare rebate.
